About the Journal

The Baraton Interdisciplinary Research Journal (BIRJ) is an international, peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary, open access journal published by the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton.

The journal provides a platform for the dissemination of original research, review articles, case studies, short communications, and letters to the editor across a wide range of disciplines, including the social sciences, humanities, health sciences, education, technology, and natural sciences.

BIRJ welcomes manuscripts employing quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method approaches, as well as theoretical and applied research contributions.

Publication Frequency

BIRJ is published twice a year, in June and December. Special issues may be published occasionally on emerging themes.

Open Access Policy

All published content is freely available to users without charge or registration.

Articles are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0), which permits sharing and adaptation for non-commercial purposes, provided appropriate attribution is given and adaptations are distributed under the same licence.

Peer Review Process

All submissions undergo double-blind peer review to ensure academic quality and integrity.

Initial Screening – Manuscripts are assessed for scope, basic requirements, formatting, originality, and ethical compliance.
Editorial Assignment – A handling editor with appropriate subject expertise is assigned.
External Review – At least two independent reviewers evaluate the manuscript's originality, relevance, clarity, methodology, and contribution.
Editorial Decision – The editor makes a decision to accept, request revisions, or reject the manuscript. Revised manuscripts may be subject to further review.

Article Processing Charges (APCs)

BIRJ charges an Article Processing Charge (APC) to support editorial management, peer review, DOI registration, publishing, and online hosting.

Kenyan authors: KSh 2,500 + applicable VAT
International authors: USD 30

There are no submission fees, and authors are not charged for manuscripts that are rejected.

The journal is continuously working to expand its presence in recognized scholarly indexing and abstracting services.

Article Dissemination

BIRJ encourages the responsible dissemination of published research through appropriate institutional repositories and scholarly platforms, in accordance with the journal's Repository and Author Self-Archiving Policy and applicable copyright and licensing terms.

Publication Ethics

BIRJ follows the principles of responsible scholarly publishing and is committed to maintaining high standards of research and publication integrity.

The journal addresses plagiarism, authorship, conflicts of interest, research misconduct, peer-review confidentiality, corrections, retractions, and other ethical matters through its Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement.

Copyright and Licensing

Authors retain copyright in their published work.
