About the Journal

The Baraton Interdisciplinary Research Journal (BIRJ) is an international, peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary, open access journal published by the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton. The journal provides a platform for the dissemination of original research, review articles, case studies, short communications, and letters to the editor across a wide range of disciplines, including the social sciences, humanities, health sciences, education, technology, and natural sciences.

BIRJ welcomes manuscripts employing quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method approaches, as well as theoretical and applied research contributions.


Publication Frequency

BIRJ is published twice a year (June and December). Special issues may be released occasionally on emerging themes.


Open Access Policy

All content is freely available without charge to users or their institutions. Articles are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0), which permits sharing and adaptation for non-commercial purposes, provided proper attribution is given and derivative works are distributed under the same license.


Peer Review Process

All submissions undergo a double-blind peer review to ensure academic quality and integrity.

  1. Initial screening – manuscripts are checked for scope, formatting, and plagiarism.

  2. Editorial assignment – a handling editor with subject expertise is appointed.

  3. External review – at least two independent reviewers evaluate originality, clarity, and methodological rigor.

  4. Decision – the editor decides to accept, request revisions, or reject. Revised papers may be re-reviewed.

Timelines:

  • Reviewer feedback: normally within 3–4 weeks.

  • Final decision: usually within 5–6 weeks of submission.

  • Accepted papers: published online within 1 week after final acceptance and proof approval.


Article Processing Charges (APCs)

To support peer review, editorial management, DOI registration, and online hosting, BIRJ charges a modest APC:

  • Kenyan authors: KSh. 2,500 (+ VAT)

  • International authors: USD 30
    There are no submission fees, and rejected manuscripts incur no charges.


Indexing and Visibility

BIRJ is indexed and abstracted in Google Scholar and listed on African Journals Online (AJOL). Articles are also disseminated through repositories such as ResearchGate, Academia.edu, Mendeley, and the Internet Archive, enhancing accessibility and visibility. The journal is actively working to expand coverage in recognized databases such as the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).


Publication Ethics

BIRJ adheres to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Best Practice Guidelines. The journal enforces strict anti-plagiarism policies, upholds the highest ethical standards in scholarly publishing, and expects authors, reviewers, and editors to comply with principles of integrity, transparency, and accountability.
